THE MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION by Anne Graham Lotz is a must read. Anne has shared with us her quest to know God fully. She has used Abraham as a model of persistent pursuit of God. Anne's style is to give the insight in scripture, and then include provocative questions for application. The fact that she is coming to Phoenix in January is another reason to make this book your own....before we hear her at Calvary Community Church, January 16 and 17, 2010.

WHAT IN THE WORLD IS GOING ON? by David Jeremiah has already been 'sequeled' (is that a word?) by LIVING WITH CONFIDENCE IN A CHAOTIC WORLD. The subtitle for the first book reads "Ten Prophetic Clues You Cannot Ignore". The information there encourages the reader = ME - to Stay Alert, for the coming of the Lord. I was energized!

This last month, Billy Graham Evang. Org. offered Tim LaHaye's book THE MERCIFUL GOD OF PROPHECY, His Loving Plan for You in the End Times. Though it was written in 2002, it is relevant for 2009. It is scriptural and gives a perspective on the end times not alwaysheard: that the coming events, i.e. the tribulation, are God's wake up call of mercy. The subtitle enforces that idea - God's love and direction for living in these days, are His merciful provision.

It is difficult to believe that I have allowed this much time to go by without posting any new contact! Two powerful wind driven microbursts on our house necessitated a new roof in June. Just last week, we had a new air conditional installed. Some speaking - some challenging physical stuff - making it through another Phoenix summer - we are now basking in the cool October breezes

A September highlight was a trip east to speak for The Salvation Army National Headquarters officers at a retreat in Lancaster Pennsylvania. David made his first solo flight and spent the days I was east, with Lois and Bryan and family in Liberty, Missouri. I joined them on Thursday flying from Philadelphia to KC - it was an exciting, exhilirating 9 day trip.I have tried to lean to visit with friends and family on FACEBOOK, but it isn't very satisfactory for this Senior Saint!

Several WORLD TURNING events are taking place in lives of people we love. We have been led to ISAIAH 54:10, and a friend and I have memorized it and are claiming it day by day:

THOUGH THE MOUNTAINS BE SHAKEN AND THE HILLS BE REMOVED,
YET MY UNFAILING LOVE FOR YOU WILL NEVER BE SHAKEN
NOR MY COVENANT OF PEACE BE REMOVED,
SAYS THE LORD, WHO HAS COMPASSION ON YOU.

This friend is facing a recurrence of cancer, others have experienced a murder in their extended family, family members suffering through years of extended illness,
marriage problems, THE STATE OF THE NATION, - even the 20th Anniversary of the San
Francisco earthquake (10-17-89) and we can know HIS LOVE, PEACE, AND PROVISION.
HALLELUJAH!

Dear family and friends,

We greet you HOTLY (not warmly) from Phoenix this Monday afternoon. Soon it will reach 112 degrees. A friend from Mpls. mentioned on the phone that since we don’t have humidity – we are probably able to enjoy being outdoors and do lots of fun things. I told her that No – we rush from house to car to market or to Gym or church – between the sunbeams! Actually we are so very comfortable in our air conditioned double-wide and thank the Lord for all the comforts we enjoy.

We don’t expect to do much traveling this summer. Because of our challenges with ‘aging’ as well as the PROJECT I have been doing for LIFT (Leaders in Fellowship Together). Lots of you know that I have been involved in COACHING Women Leaders in Ministry for a long time. Now we are videotaping these classes and they will be put on DVDs and with a manual, will hopefully encourage and equip women in their ministries. IT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING thing I have done in years….your prayers are deeply appreciated.

July 30 and 31st are the dates for the taping of the 2nd series of six sessions at Calvary Community Church. They are so well equipped in their media ministry. I am in the process of putting together the manual for this second series.

DAVID is so patient - we take time out to go to the gym, out to lunch, to a movie (when there is one we can see!!!), or up to the rec hall for a potluck. We are enjoying the new pastor at Scottsdale Bible Church.

We have made contact with NIVEA LOPEZ, who now lives in Austin with her husband and now grown family. Nivea was the first young woman to come to the Lord 44 years ago in Puerto Rico – at our home. We just found a photo of the outdoor Sunday School in Barrio Monacillo. I am holding up one of the wonderful song charts that Betty made for us, and David has the guitar. Our Lois is the only red haired one in the group – about 4 years old. When we feel our limitations – we remember all the adventures the Lord has led us on and are very grateful! I may try to get the photo scanned for my computer.

Our kids are good - David and Carol and DJ staying close in this summer…Lois and Bryan are ‘at home’ in Liberty – and have had the worst of the Midwest weather go by them. Emily is in Washington at Warm Beach for 7 weeks, working in the Horsemanship Camp. Brianna works at a Vet’s office, but will go to Colorado for RUNNING CAMP late July.
Sam went to SUMMERFEST camp with his sisters (but they didn’t make much contact during the week of hundreds of Jr. and Sr. Hi kids - J)

Enjoy Your Vacation at Home

Go next door or across the street; sit there and wish you were home. Remarkably like being on vacation.

Examine the ruts the delivery truck made in your yard. Use a magnifying glass. Looks exactly like the Grand Canyon.

Fill your suitcases with books or bricks, and run to the car every day. Same thing as touring Europe. (Be sure to have a camera hanging around yur neck, too.)

Fill the bathrub with water, put in some sharp stones and a lot of gravel. Aha! Just like the beach!

Let the faucet run in the kitchen sink or bathrub. Sounds as if you were at Niagara Falls.

Leave the bedroom window open, without screens, so the mosquitoes can come in.
Just like Camping!

From the fullness of His grace, we have all received one blessing after another….

We have a wooden sign above our kitchen windows THOU SHALT NOT WHINE. How I need the reminder – the most effective antidote to whining is THANKSGIVING….listing blessing after blessing.
For instance, I broke my foot last week – the Doctor wisely reminded me that the greatest blessing of the break, is that I had not fallen and broken a hip. Hurray!

I have prayed over and over, for special grace to conquer complaining.
Just yesterday I learned of a pastor in Kansas City who gave his congregation purple flexible wristbands. They are to wear them on the right wrist – moving the bracelet to the left hand every time they complain, or are negative. He has distributed over a million to churches and individuals who have heard of the plan and want to join.
The goal is to go 21 days without complaining or WHINING. After several weeks trying, the pastor made it!

I am buying a bag of bracelets for us here at Boulder Ridge at our Spice of Life….Try it!

Just a note from us….
Mama used to address the family letters: Dear All, That sounds good to me because we would love to visit with you all – one by one – but hopefully this will keep us in touch. We appreciate so much the notes and emails…

April is the most beautiful month in Arizona…
It is also the month of David’s two cataract surgeries – he now wears only reading glasses. A week ago Sunday evening I was getting ready for a Monday morning trip to Tucson for some more LIFT (Leaders In Fellowship Together) classes, when I tripped in our kitchen, turned my foot HARD, and yelled. I won’t give you all the details – but my foot is broken and in a BOOT. Our prayer is that it will heal well so that I will not have to go to a plaster cast in another week.

We have a new family photo, which I will have Carol help me put on my BLOG.

Some New Perfume...

I received a very special gift of DAISY perfume. It came in a zippered gold case and the bottle itself has the shiny top of gold and white daisies. It is elegant and will be used carefully!
Paul, the apostle, encouraged and challenged the Corinthians with these words from The Message:
Through us, he brings knowledge of Christ. Everywhere we go, people breathe in the
exquisite fragrance. Because of Christ, we give off a sweet scent rising to God, which is

A Lighter Touch

Someone has quipped: I feel like my body has gotten totally out of shape, so I got my doctor's permission to join a fitness club and start exercising. I decided to take an aerobics class for seniors. I bent, twisted, gyrated, jumped up and down, and perspired for an hour. But, by the time I got my leotards on, the class was over.

"I received these words in a letter from Ingafrid, a mentor in the faith in Sweden. She and her husband are getting 'up there' in years, and she was describing their limitations of eyesight, etc. She said, "...we ae goriwng old and incapacitated. That means that we have to hand back by and by the gifts and abilities we have had on loan for so many years. And we have to say, 'thank you for the time we've had them'." What a blessing to know someone like this in whom His Spirit has been working for so long."
In this time of our lives, may we cheerfully surrender these gifts, and
pray for our continuing stewardship of all that God has given.

It is as though we have been catapulted into the next year of our lives! On December 10, my husband was recovering from a bad cold, and when he tried to get up, he fell. 911 was called and
the firemen came. It was a friendly moment in the midst of the crisis when a couple of the firemen recognized David from the Community College Fitness Center! He is so social and talks to everyone..(ask me about it sometime). Five days at Mayo Hospital, then 3 and a half weeks at the Scottsdale Life Care Center - now home for two weeks. Life goes on and we thank the Lord with all our hearts for the loving support of family and friends. I am going to attach a photo of David in his new recliner.

One of the books read last week is the Ezekiel Option by Joel Rosenberg. It is a prophetic novel, and a page turner. It is available in any bookstore, I imagine. Look up his website and get acquainted with him, his blogs, and be amazed at his insights. You will be fascinated at his perspective on current events in the light of Bible prophecy.

An anniversary?

Today is a DUBIOUS anniversary for David and me. It was 14 years ago this morning that David had a debilitating stroke at Bridgemont in San Francisco. As we prayed at breakfast this morning (which I bring into bed for us each day!) we thanked the Lord for all the ways His grace has been sufficient. Aren't you glad, along with us, that you do not know the days ahead -- but step by step the Lord keeps on leading. Job has said, "He knows the way thaat I take, and when He has tried me, I will come forth as gold, refined by fire." We are so glad that HE KNOWS and WE ARE GOING FOR THE GOLD.

For those checking who do not know, David was the Administrator of Bridgemont Christian High School and Junior High in San Francisco, when at a devotional time for staff, he was asked to lead in prayer, and dropped his Bible, lost his speech, and had a stroke. IT WAS A KAIROS MOMENT for us....God is faithful.

AUTUMN SPICE OF LIFE

Next Thursday we are having the first fall Get Together of SPICE OF LIFE here at the park. We are featuring APPLES - cool and crisp and ready for us to try a new dip that I learned at a Retreat. We will have an apple paring contest - to see who can carve the longest peeling, an since some of our women are returning from their summer get-aways, we will do a lot of catching up. And our lesson will be ALL ABOUT EVE, of course.
Here is the delicious CARAMEL APPLE dip...

1 8 ounce package cream cheese softened
1/2 cup apple butter (found in Jam section at store)
1/4 c. packed brown sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla
1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)

Mix well together and serve with apple slices (kept fresh in a little pineapple juice.

Summer Sip n Sees are over!

Here at Boulder Ridge, our manufactured home park, we have gathered in neighbor's homes every two weeks for a SIP N SEE. That is a southern term, I'm told, where women get together for a glass of tea (sweetened of course) and enjoy things like seeing wedding gifts, or a new grandbaby's antics, or vacation pictures, or treasures collected. We have discussed BAD GIRLS OF THE BIBLE, by Liz Curtis Higgs. What a grand time we have had getting even better acquainted while visiting in homes.

SLIGHTLY BAD GIRLS OF THE BIBLE is Liz' newest book. I have a copy in front of me, and she has done it again! Five 'slightly bad girls' of the Old Testatment come to life with all their foibles, scars, and idiosyncrasies.

SUMMER COACHING CLASS

One of my great joys is encouring women in their ministries. I often use the Mary Poppins' principle: A SPOONFUL of SUGAR helps the medicine go down. We have used many different themes - but this week we held a coaching class (under the sponsorship of LIFT - Leaders in Fellowship Together - be sure to visit the website LIFTAZ.com) with the theme GET IN THE GAME. Team names, and team building techniques, PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE, was in a fun baseball game setting. We had peanuts and popcorn and crackerjacks. Practice included mentoring others and multiplying our resources. The special challenge was THE ROAD TRIP from Luke 10, where Jesus sent out the 70 'rookies' while the home team watched.
We understood at the end of the day why Jesus said in Luke 10:23:
"How privileged you are to have seen what you have seen."
We thank God for the privilege of serving Him - and being confident of the win!

Recipe for CHICKEN SPAGHETTI - Delicious!

We have enjoyed this dish at Sherrie and Rich Anderson's home on two occasions: Now I am getting the recipe out to you...

4 c. cooked diced chicken
1 1/2 c. chopped onion
1 1/2 c. chopped celery
1 c chopped bell pepper
1 sm can sliced mushrooms
1 sm.can sliced ripe olives
1 can stewed tomatoes
1 can rotel mexican tomatoes
2 cans cream of mushroom soup
1 lb. spaghetti
1-2 c. grated cheese
salt, pepper, garlic to taste

Saute onion, bell pepper, and celery in oil or butter till soft.
Add chicken broth if necessary for desired thickness (about 1 cup)
Add chicken. Cook pasta, mix all together -

in a BIG bowl, or 9x13 pan.
Cover top with cheese. Bake @350 for 30 minutes.

KITCHEN TABLE COUNSELING by Muriel Cook and Shelly Cook Volkhardt, Navpress is a must for your women. It is subtitled as a Practical and Biblical Guide forWomen helping others.

We had the privilege of having Muriel come to the LIFT (see website LIFTAZ.com) Summer Seminar. Muriel has been teaching and speaking for many years, but her presentation was as warm and fresh as if it was being shared for the first time. Her life experience contributes to her wisdom of course, but the lingering benefit to me what the deeply scripture approach she has to serving others.

Let me quote a few do's and don'ts from her book:

Do meet a woman at her house, restaurant, or a car.

Don't invite her to your home.

Do listen to see if her thinking is correct. Biblical. Make her face the Truth.

John 8:32 The truth will set you free.

Do make them responsible for their own decisions.

Don't take that responsibility on yourself. Example:

If the Bible says it, do it. If not in the Bible say:

'If I were you, I would do this, but that is your decision.'

Don't submit to a driving force to help everyone.

See John 5:1-9 the man at the pool of Bethesda.

Luke 5:15, 16 Great multitudes came. Jesus slipped away to pray.

DO ask God, "Send me the person YOU want me to help."

It was a joy for David and me to visit The Salvation Army Deeper Life Weekend, here in Phoenix. We had a reunion with Commissioner Israel Gaither, the present National Commander of The Salvation Army. 'Izzy" was a session mate of ours in S.A. Training School nearly 45 years ago in the Bronx, New York. Commissioner Gaither is a man of God and we were so pleased to see him again. He and his wife Eva have served in the United States, South Africa, and several years in London, England.

lynda sent me your email asking for a paragraph telling about what our women are doing this summer. since i organized the summer study, she asked that i write the article.
feel free to edit.

To reach the women of Payson as well as the women of Mt Bible church over the summertime, the women's ministry team developed the idea to have a bible study in the evening that would meet only five times. it was hoped that we could attract the working women who are often "left out". We meet every other Thursday evening starting the end of May and through the end of July, from 6-7:30pm with a time of worship, a teaching lesson, and then we answer questions and discuss the lesson around the table as we eat a meal together.
We are using the book by Elizabeth George, Remarkable Women of the Bible, as a basis of our teaching. Each week we have a different teacher who speaks on a different chapter from the book.
We have encouraged women to come by telling them that there is no preparation needed- in fact they don't even need a book. Each woman comes with her own sack meal and the hospitality team provides dessert and drinks.
We have had women from several other churches attending with the attendance ranging from 80-100 women, so we are attaining our goal of reaching out to the women of Payson. We did this last year using the book by Liz Curtis Higgs, Bad Girls of the Bible, and it was attended very well also.

We respelled the PERSONAL, and when it became PURS-ONAL we knew we had an idea for a Retreat. Such fun exploring purses… Messages on PURSON-ality PLUS, UP CLOSE and PURSONAL, THE PURSONAL TOUCH….well, you see how it could be worked out.

Weighing purses, purse scavenger hunts, purse fashion show with flair, one church had each woman bring a good used purse and all were given to a halfway house for women.
Trinity Bible Church had a good friend who was a baker par excellent, and she baked a giant purse cake, replete with change purse, credit cards, lipstick and mirror.

Our purses are a combination of form, function, and fashion. Sometimes it takes years of searching for just the right one that is roomy enough for our necessities without being too big, has just the right number of compartments, transmits just the right message about our classiness/funkiness, and looks good on us when we carry it. This is a distinctly female phenomenon. We ‘try on’ purses. This is why there are mirrors in the handbag department. A purse must look good on us. Notice that there are no mirrors in the guy’s wallet or backpack department.

I’ve been told this is a southern tradition. You are invited to a SIP ‘N SEE if someone wants to introduce a new grandchild, or vacation photos and experiences, or show off wedding gifts, even joyfully report on a mission trip….

Well, here at Boulder Ridge, the over 55 Manufactured Home park where we live in Phoenix, we are enjoying summer SIP ‘N SEES, in neighbor’s homes. We do a variety of things, of course sip iced tea and cookies, seeing family photos and treasures, hearing stories, especially of God’s goodness and direction, and sharing time together in God’s word.

Consider getting to know one another in a special way by enjoying a gathering in your neighbor’s home.
